securing next winters heat

went to my parents yesterday to get next winters heat--
2 trees that had fallen on their property.
chainsawing is hard work, im sore from it.
splitting it is the fun part!
a little side project im working on:
mitered by hand, nice tight gap-free fit!

This Week in Rack Building

basically done, little bit of finish work, and some bungee tie-downs to put on.
doing the legs as a sub-assembly helps keep things in alignment.
update on the mega rack. still have some adjustable canti-mount tabs to install, make the canti-post attachments, additional bracing on the legs, adjustable mounts for lowrider eyelet equipped forks, the rear support for the platform, and the fork crown piece for a 26" fork. phwew, getting there though!
this is what i made my parents for christmas, havent had a chance to take a picture for some time.

as laura was leaving to ride to work she told me i need to go out for a morning ride...ya ya ya i have work to do i told her. then i walked outside, and caught a whiff of the air...ahhh the smell of spring! so i had to go out and ride! photo documentation below.

good thing im a bicyclist, not a ped.
endless love, of hunting
dont mess with this tree
even though it feels like spring, its still winter
hanging out in 2 states at once
i found this piece of plastic in my trash. it is almost as if it was made for this!
lots of cool stuff like this hidden all over the area

stainless meet cro-mo, cro-mo meet stainless

silver-brazed stainless rails slip fit into 4130 "lugged" portion.

up close

some up-close details of the latest racks

surly cross check and LHT fender brackets

a little pet peeve of mine regarding surly crosscheck and LHT bikes--
because "fatties fit fine" the axle to crown length on these bikes is longer than many other bikes of the same touring/cross family. the longer a-c means the fender sits real high on the tire. aesthetically this doesnt work for me. i want my front fender to hug the tire! so i made a few of these:
if you run the tab through the slot on the fender, you can use presta nut spacers to raise the fender higher, as long as you have enough tire clearance under the tab, plus there is about 5-7mm of vertical travel on the bracket at the crown.

the tire mounted is a continental travel contact 35mm.

freshly powdercoated and looking good.

getting closer

more lug work

right outta the dunk tank, needs almost no finish work, yay!!
holes for mounting the removable panniers thingies to. the rear hole is pierced through the tube, the front hole is notched. drilling the rear hole was very nerve-racking, it has to be straight, no mistakes allowed! nearly all the bits and pieces for this rack are done, its just a matter of sticking it all together, then zapping it with fire and brass.
