fancy bits- crane brass bell and gilles-berthoud handlebar bag. gonna need a new rack for that!

NoTubes v Specialized

if you havent heard already--
stans notubes has filed a lawsuit against specialized for patent infringement.

notubes rims are the best thing to happen tubeless since, well, tubeless MTB wheels!
it is a great system, invented and patented by stan, and he deserves all credit and royalties IMO.

if you havent gone tubeless yet, you should. dont be afraid. its not the maintenance nightmare than non-tubeless users claim or think that it is.

lotsa time on little bits

start with a couple holes and a rough idea
finish one, then duplicate. make some other bits...
do you see where this is going?
nice n smooth.... for now this is just a scrap, but it will be part of a rack tomorrow.

mr whirly

last week i got the chance to install a surly mr. whirly crankset for the first time.
if you MUST use outboard bearings, i think it is a pretty darn good system. personally, im a square taper kinda guy, but lets not get into that.
things i like about it-
swappable spindle, gives you std mtb chainline, pugsley, or coming soon WI 47.5mm chainline.
uses any shimano MTB compatible outboard bearings (shimano, race face, FSA, chris king, phil wood)
aesthetically pleasing, silver or black, nice laser etched logo.
swappable bolt circle. 110, 94, or 104.
the contour of the arms match the chainstay contour of the karate monkey perfectly (see aesthetically pleasing) ill get a pic of this soon..

stainless update

this one is nearly done, just waiting for the next tubing order, ran out of stainless tubing. legs are done but not pictured.
this is my first stainless rack, i learned a good bit from it.
see the center tube? thats not optical distortion from the camera, thats heat distortion. to get the nickel silver to "flow" properly i have to get the tubes very hot. 304 stainless is already malleable to start with (compared to 4130), so getting the temp up to 1800+deg F makes it even harder to keep things put.
i think for my next stainless rack i will use 50N silver. much lower temp to wet it out, and easy to build a uniform little fillet. i used that for the eyelets on the platform and the legs. only disavantage of silver is the price. $20+/oz, whereas nickel silver or brass is $20/lbs!!!!

this rack was designed and will be thoroughly loaded and tested by fxdwhl, post 1, post 2. he is still testing a rack from my first batch.
